🧉 Brewing & Enjoying Yerba Mate
What do I need to prepare traditional mate?
You’ll need a gourd (mate cup), bombilla (filtered straw), and hot water around 70–80 °C. You can begin with our starter kits—they’re ideal for newcomers.
How to brew loose-leaf yerba mate traditionally?
-
Fill the gourd about 2/3 with yerba.
-
Tilt so the leaves gather on one side.
-
Pour a splash of cooled water to moisten the leaves.
-
Insert the bombilla into the drier side.
-
Pour hot (not boiling) water into the space next to the bombilla.
-
Sip and refill until the flavor fades.
Can I re-use the leaves?
Yes! Traditional mate is meant to be re-steeped multiple times until the flavor dissipates.
What about cold mate (tereré)?
Absolutely! Fill a gourd or cup with cold water and ice instead of hot—it’s wonderfully refreshing, especially in warm weather.
