Daxueshan, meaning “Great Snow Mountain,” rises to an altitude of 3,480 meters, with its peak covered in snow year-round. The wild tea—often referred to by local farmers as “mountain tea”—grows in rugged terrain between 2,000 and 2,300 meters. Despite the elevation, these trees sprout earlier than most cultivated teas in Yunnan and elsewhere in China, making them ready for harvest by late March. Daxueshan wild tea is renowned for its delicate flavor and its distinctive wild orchid fragrance. The farmers who produce this tea belong to the Li Su ethnic minority, a rare mountain-dwelling group in Yunnan.
